Are you Prepared to Bare?

With the papers full of Wimbledon lovelies in short shorts and festival fashion demanding hotpants and Hunter wellies, this summer it’s all about baring your legs in the name of fashion.

But many women will be reluctant to do this due to unsightly thread veins on their legs –normally red and blue in colour, they lie very close to the surface of the skin and can be quite noticeable.

Here at BMI McIndoe Surgical Centre, Claire Judge our specialist sclerotherapy practitioner has been overwhelmed with interest in injection sclerotherapy, especially among women who want to wear summery clothes, which means baring their legs. Sclerotherapy is a painless procedure which can take as little as thirty minutes to perform.  It is a safe and well established treatment for thread veins on the legs and has been around for 50 years in the UK.

Claire Judge is a Registered General Nurse, and with 13 years experience in sclerotherapy, she has written extensively on sclerotherapy and teaches other practitioners with Veincare Training.

Although the causes of thread veins are unknown, they normally run in families and tend to occur after hormonal changes such as pregnancy or when taking HRT and often become worse with age. They can also be caused by trauma or surgery and are more common among people who spend a lot of time standing. Unfortunately if you have a tendency towards thread veins, there is little that can be done to stop them from appearing.

At BMI McIndoe Surgical Centre, the treatment starts with a free initial consultation and a full assessment by your sclerotherapy practitioner regarding the best treatment options for your legs. The practitioner should be able to inform you at this stage how many sessions you will require and their cost. This varies according to the type and number of veins requiring treatment. On completion you should expect an improvement in the overall appearance of 60 – 80%.
