Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the UK when millions of people across the country will be raising money for research into the condition. It is also a chance to raise awareness about the types of treatment that are available for those diagnosed with the disease, which affects about 41,000 women in the UK each year.
At BMI McIndoe Surgical Centre, we have leading surgeons with extensive experience in supporting women who need to undergo surgical procedures like a mastectomy or wide local excision. Undergoing such treatments is commonplace to treat an individual diagnosed with early breast cancer though it can often go hand in hand with additional treatments.
Our surgeons have gone on to help thousands with breast reconstruction surgery to help them regain a more natural shape and boost their confidence after what is a life-changing ordeal. Breast reconstruction aims to match the affected side to the remaining natural breast. This can either be carried out with an implant introduced under the skin and muscle of your chest, or by using material – skin, fat and sometimes muscle - from another part of your body. A combination of these techniques is used for some women.
Whether breast reconstruction is right for a person is a decision for them and their family. It is a difficult decision to reach and not one that should be rushed into. At BMI McIndoe Surgical Centre, we are happy to arrange an initial consultation with one of our surgeons to discuss your unique situation. You can ask about the procedure, find out how it would work, take advice on your suitability and learn about your expected recovery.
